SCHOOL NURSE
Position type: Full time, Academic Year Only
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Reports to: Executive Assistant to the Head of School
Position Summary: The nurse is the health manager of the school and is responsible for maintaining health records and delivering health services through the clinic by providing temporary care for our community, primarily students, who are ill or injured.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist students who are ill or injured at school. Administer emergency first aid when necessary to any in our school community.
- Gather and maintain immunization and health records, ensuring compliance with Indiana statutes.
- Gather and maintain a current list of students with allergies or other medical concerns, and keep teachers and cafeteria workers informed.
- Monitor field trip calendar and prepare in advance field trip emergency bags.
- Communicate with parents as necessary about illnesses or injuries at school.
- Utilize the Indiana State Board of Health guidelines for excluding students and/or staff with possible communicable diseases.
- Maintain and order clinic supplies within budget.
- Dispense medications as requested by parent/guardian; secure medications in a locked cabinet.
- Maintain active emergency forms and health care records for all students.
- Support faculty in education regarding health-related matters.
- Coordinate faculty and staff training in Universal Precautions, CPR, AED use, and education regarding allergy training.
- Inspect and maintain AED.
- Schedule and supervise the administration of flu shots for faculty and staff.
- Schedule and supervise the administration of vision and hearing screenings for students.
- Serve on the school’s Crisis Committee, school’s Wellness Committee, and other committees as appropriate.
- Develop and update school health policies and forms.
- Provide clerical support and relief to the Executive Assistant to the Head of School.
- Attend workshops and other professional development opportunities.
Knowledge, Skills, Characteristics and Abilities:
- Strong communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
- Working computer skills
Credentials and Experience:
- Recent nursing experience required
- Licensed RN
- School nursing experience preferred
